THE GODS

Gods survive off the beliefs of humans. Their source of power comes from their stories. Therefore, the more worshipped the gods are, the more powerful they are. Likewise, the more stories about them, the more abilities they possess. In this universe, when gods aren’t believed in, they do not cease to exist, but they are weak and have trouble maintaining a visible form. Often, however, these weaker gods are overtaken or merged with dominant gods and continue their existence in a new identity.

The patron gods of Vibque are derived from nature: The Volcano, The Oceans, the seasons, and the times of day. Prior to the establishment of summoners, gods used more cataclysmic events to evoke worship and fear within the masses. Early Vibquians believed in these deities not due to their generosity, but for their destruction and mercilessness. People had to believe in the Harvest after a long famine; people had no choice but to believe in the Volcano after lava enveloped their homes.

Sometime in the distant past, Vibquians were able to negotiate with the dwelling gods for a more constructive means of quid pro quo. By having the ability to contract gods, select Vibquians became what is now known as ‘summoner’. In exchange for worship, the gods offered blessings, guidance, and aid when need be. The contract, sealed in a page a divine book, with a part of both the human and the god’s soul, became a pact of symbiosis.
